Rolex Day-Date ref. 6611B

The Rolex 6611 was the second generation of the Rolex Day-Date.
To talk about the 6611, we must first take a small step back. We first became acquainted with the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956 with the ref. 6510 which was aesthetically recognisable by a domed bezel and the 6511 which had a fluted bezel known as a millerighe because of the thicker knurling than the one we will see later. These models suffered from some technical drawbacks related to the movement. Fortunately, Rolex spotted the problem fairly quickly and the first generation of wobbly Day-Date watches (due to the date click) was only in production for a year.
Thanks to mechanical improvements, the inscription on the dial was also changed from ‘Officially’ to ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’.
This change gave rise to the new Ref. 6611: it was the same watch but equipped with an updated calibre that finally worked well.

The DAY DATE was a novelty for three reasons:
1)it was the world’s first waterproof watch to display both the date at 3 o’clock and the full day of the week at 12 o’clock.
2)It was also the first Rolex watch to be made exclusively in 18k white, yellow and pink gold and platinum.
3)Finally, for the Rolex Day-Date, the President bracelet was fitted and minted for the first time.

The Rolex Day-Date ref. 6611 was only in production for a short period. In fact, in 1959/1960 it was replaced by the Ref. 1800 series.
This example is one of the last produced and is in exceptional condition. It features a beautiful pie pan silvered dial with a circular finish and luminous material placed under the index to give it more elegance without sacrificing night visibility.
