Rolex Sea Dweller ref. 16600 ser. P NOS Full Set

The Rolex Submariner has largely defined the genre as we know it today. But, if you ask me, it is not the most interesting dive watch made by Rolex.

So I look to the Sea-Dweller, a watch that pushed the Submariner concept beyond its boundaries. The Sea-Dweller is intertwined with the advent of deep-sea diving, it has been from its inception a professional watch used for experiments and heavy underwater work ( Sealab and Comex).
The Sea-Dweller reference 16600 was produced for 20 years between 1989 and 2009, and is the last to receive a 40 mm case with an aluminum bezel. A neo vintage model with a magic that has been lost in ‘evolution with their modern counterparts.

Measuring 40mm in diameter, 46.1mm from lug to lug, and 14.4mm thick, the 16600 is not without presence, but the way it is designed does not compromise wearability. It looks more massive than a 14060 or 16610 of the same generation, but it wears just as easily. It also looks like a more interesting watch than fellow Submariners, providing the date without the cyclops and the gas release valve that suggests “Heavy duty.”
The 16600 is everything I love about Rolex’s instrument-watches. Its design is purpose-driven and makes no “noise” about its status. It has a simple design and is more than comfortable to wear. The Rolex 16600 Sea-Dweller may be the best dive watch Rolex has ever produced, finding it new after 24 years since it was released is a more unique than rare opportunity to take home the last true Sea Dweller.
