Certina is a very old Swiss brand founded in Grenchen, Switzerland, in 1888. For over 137 years, Certina has been producing high-quality, reliable, accurate and innovative watches. The Chronolympic has been Certina’s best known and most successful chronograph with many interesting design variations. 1971 and 1972 are among the most important and eventful years for Certina. The company produced a regatta chronograph for the 1972 Olympic Games in Monaco, the beautiful Certina Chronolympic 8701-504 .What makes it special?
It looks like a three-hand watch, but under the white chrono hand is another orange hand used to time the 5-10 or 15-minute regatta start session. The combination of the fantastic tonneau case and multicolored dial design is unique, exuding 1970s. The 12-hour totalizer is located on a counter at 6 o’clock. The Chronolympic Regatta has a tachymeter scale printed on the inside of the dial. This watch is the only one to exclusively mount the hand-wound Valjoux caliber 728 based on the Valjoux 72 with three complications :
– 1/5 second chronograph (activated by the two round pushers) with graduated tachymeter scale on inner bezel for 400 units per hour;
– 60-minute central dragging counter;
– 12-hour counter (auxiliary dial at 6 o’clock)
What makes this particular specimen so special is undoubtedly its excellent condition. The stainless steel case is unpolished , has sharp edges and perfectly visible numerals on the outer case back. Another highlight of this Certina is the original NSA for Certina steel bracelet. The condition of the bracelet is like new and has no notable marks.
