In 1988, the new Rolex Daytona ref. 16520, the first Rolex automatic chrono, was presented during the Basel Salon.

This new model mounted the innovative 4030 movement, which was a sophisticated elaboration of the best industrial movement of the time, the Zenith 400 El Primero.
It required more than 200 modifications so that it could be equaled to its own quality standards.

The new Daytona is produced in steel, gold, and for the first time in steel and gold. The watch mounts a sapphire crystal, is water-resistant to 100 meters and has generous dimensions, all these features combined with the scarce production and the consequent difficulty of finding it on the market immediately turned it into a real object of desire.

A commercial phenomenon, resulting in very long waiting lists at dealers, or purchasable “in parallel” at a far higher price than the list price.

Early models had the bezel engraved at 200, and the dial printed white, black or champagne, with 5 “detached” inscriptions.
All production that included the early Rolex Daytona ref. 16520 had, as a good omen, the serial with Rolex’s R, later L, E, X.

Those with serial A and later with P represent the production end of the 16520 model, for this desire of every collector.
