Panerai Limited Edition The Egyptian Pam 00341
A bit of history of the original model: at the end of World War II, many operators who had served in the glorious 10th MAS Flotilla were called upon by virtue of the experience gained directly “in the field” from various nations, in this case to train and educate the Egyptian Navy’s dive attackers.
Here then was the idea and then the request by the Egyptian Command for a special watch for its Raiders. This request was made directly to the Italian Navy Command as it had an exclusive relationship with the company Officine Panerai. Panerai in those years had ref. 6152 -1 but could not supply it as it was a military secret and made exclusively for the Italian Navy, so Panerai began to design and build “in house” what later became the GPF 2/56 EGIZIANO (from 1956 the year of design).
This is also because Rolex was unlikely to put a new reference into production for so few examples, and besides, Officine Panerai had accumulated a lot of technical experience to be able to do it themselves. The case of the GPF 2/56 takes its inspiration from the compasses and depth gauges that Panerai used to supply to the Italian MM, with a diameter of an impressive 60 mm and 66 mm with the crown protector bridge. The GPF 2/56 is certainly a technically superior watch to the Radiomir and Luminor watches designed and built by Rolex, in this reference Panerai has poured all its experience gained over the years.
I like to call the EGIZIANO the “masterpiece” of Officine Panerai as it boasts many firsts:
1) it was designed and produced entirely “in house” while virtually all other references were designed and made by Rolex.
2) the first Panerai reference to mount the famous crown protector bridge.
3) the first Panerai reference to have the famous “screw” to tighten the strap to the lugs, in the Luminors a sturdy pressure pin was used.
4) the first reference to have continuous seconds readout.
5) the first reference to have a graduated rotating bezel (both directions).
6) the GPF 2/56 was the first watch in which the Officine Panerai mark was used on the case back, this mark was first used in 1955 for the GPF 4/55 compasses
7) the first Panerai reference to be equipped with the Angelus caliber SF 240 produced by Stolz Frères SA, an excellent caliber with as much as 8 days of power reserve.
It was produced in about 60 pieces although 100 pieces were planned, today very rare and obviously admired, Officine Panerai Richemont wanted to pay homage to this exceptional watch with its reissue produced in 500 pieces, in 2009, PAM EGIZIANO 341 made in Titanium for greater lightness, and equipped with the modern manufacture caliber P 2002/7 with manual winding and 8 days of power reserve, reference today sought after by collectors and very expensive the list was € 26,300. I always thank the authors of the book Panerai una storia Italiana for the information published.
